City of Weston, Florida’s WestonGov Academy has been recognized for its innovative approach to civic engagement through the Strategic Leadership & Governance Award. Designed for communities with populations over 50,000, the seven-week academy gives residents an in-depth look at how local government operates while fostering stronger relationships between citizens and city leadership. Under the leadership of Chief Administrative Officer Donald Decker, the program equips participants to become informed ambassadors within their neighborhoods.

The academy was created to address a common challenge facing many local governments: limited public understanding of municipal operations. Through interactive sessions, facility tours, and presentations from department heads and city leaders, participants gain firsthand knowledge of topics such as budgeting, public safety, emergency management, parks, planning and zoning, public works, ethics, and municipal governance. By providing transparency and education, the program helps build trust between residents and their local government.

Since its launch, WestonGov Academy has produced measurable results. Participants consistently report a greater appreciation for the complexities of local government and an increased understanding of the services their city provides. Many graduates have gone on to become trusted sources of information within their communities, sharing accurate information with neighbors and encouraging greater civic participation. The program has also inspired graduates to become more engaged in community affairs, including seeking opportunities for public service.

Program organizers identified several lessons throughout implementation, including the importance of maintaining an open and fair application process and creating an environment where residents feel comfortable asking questions. While staff initially anticipated skepticism from participants, they instead found that residents were eager to learn, resulting in stronger relationships, greater mutual respect, and increased confidence in local government. The academy has become a valued initiative for both staff and the community.

As local governments continue to face increasingly complex policy decisions and fiscal challenges, WestonGov Academy demonstrates the value of investing in civic education. By helping residents better understand how local government works, the program has created a more informed electorate and strengthened public trust. Nearly 100 residents have completed the academy, leaving them better prepared to make informed decisions, engage constructively with city leaders, and serve as ambassadors for their community.
