The City of Sandy, Oregon (population 13,159) is recruiting its next Public Works Director.
The Sandy Public Works Department is in the process of long-term planning and implementation of historic, critical water and wastewater infrastructure investments. The next Director will have the opportunity to lead a strong staff and technical consultant team through these major projects underway and have a significant part in shaping the character and trajectory of this professional Department and spirited community.
Under the direction of the City Manager, the Public Works Director provides leadership, direction, and general oversight of the Public Works Department. The Director serves as a key member of the City’s Leadership team. The Public Works Department is responsible for the City’s public infrastructure, including water and wastewater treatment, distribution, and collection systems, stormwater management, transportation infrastructure, and engineering services. The position supervises up to 14 FTE positions. The Director coordinates Department strategy and policy to ensure the City’s mission and core values are incorporated into operational activities and services. Responsibilities also include communication with the community, City Council, a variety of regional, state, and federal agencies and regulatory bodies as needed.
The City of Sandy, Oregon, located on the eastern edge of the Portland metro area, serves as a gateway to Mount Hood and as the commercial center for the broader eastern Clackamas County area which supports around 42,000 area residents as well the thousands of visitors to the Mt. Hood Recreation area. The Sandy community is proud of its small-town lifestyle, walkable downtown, and many annual festivals. The ideal candidate possesses and has demonstrated the following attributes:

• Workforce management skills
• Experience with public works facility planning and management
• Relevant knowledge or experience to coordinate emergency preparedness
• Knowledge of transportation asset management and enhancement
• Appreciation of the historic and growing Sandy community
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, business administration, public administration or related field and at least five years of upper-level, preferably government, management experience are required. Ten or more years of increasingly responsible experience in public works as well as a master’s degree and a State of Oregon Professional Engineer license are desirable but not required.
Combinations of relevant education and experience that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform essential functions may be considered.
Compensation is $109,976 to $143,218 plus excellent benefits.
