How you communicate during a crisis is key to establishing trust and ensuring the best possible outcome. Crisis communication is not an innate ability, but a skill that leaders must learn and practice.
Julie Parker Communications in collaboration with ICMA’s Civic Learning Lab and the League of Minnesota Cities will conduct in-person training to prepare Minnesota local government managers, assistant managers, and senior department leaders to lead institutional communication during politically sensitive, high-risk public events, including reputational crises.
The course emphasizes governance responsibility, constitutional considerations, council dynamics, and long-term public trust. It will focus on both public-facing and internal communication during a crisis, and blend communication theory with hands-on practice to prepare participants to respond quickly and effectively when it matters most. To reinforce key concepts and build real-world readiness, customized tabletop exercises will be integrated into the training.
This program is being conducted for Minnesota municipal employees. LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE; ICMA Members Only (ICMA members may register their staff).
