The role of an assistant chief administrative officer (ACAO) is multifaceted, blending strategic leadership with tactical expertise. As a pivotal step toward becoming a chief administrative officer (CAO), this position demands versatility and skill.
ICMA’s ACAO Committee presents the Elevate Your Leadership: The ACAO Masterclass Series, a curated collection of webinars designed to equip you with expert tips and insights, regardless of your career stage, to excel as an ACAO and prepare for your path to senior leadership.
Session 3: Leading from the ACAO Position is designed for seasoned ACAOs seeking to learn, refine and improve skill sets to be a highly effective leader in this role. You will receive advice from the field on how to navigate the opportunities and challenges that come with leading as second in command. You will discuss:
- Career Advancement: Encouragement for ACAOs to actively pursue new projects or initiatives that challenge them and keep them engaged.
Understanding Responsibilities: Ensure ACAOs understand the CAO's duties and are prepared to assume them during public meetings, emergencies or other situations where the CAO is not available.
Building Relationships: Discuss methods for building trust and maintaining team morale during periods of organizational change.
Leadership Squeeze: Challenge of simultaneously leading staff in the organization as well as “leading up” to the CAO and governing body.
