Redevelopment today can be sustainable development, if it attends to such goals as reducing urban sprawl and commuting time, reuse of abandoned land, urban centered growth, and preservation of open space. To recognize the efforts of the agencies and professionals who are involved in such redevelopment efforts, the California Redevelopment Association (CRA) launched its Award of Excellence for Sustainable Development in 2007.
