Starting in 2000, Orange County, NC created the Lands Legacy program. It was the first comprehensive county open space land protection initiative in the state. The program protects wildlife habitats, farmland, cultural sites, and future parkland by purchasing the properties or placing permanent restrictions on privately owned land.
