The City of Aurora, Colorado has been actively involved in providing recreation, socialization, independence, skill development, cognitive enhancement, and self-worth activities to younger residents with disabilities for 33 years. As part of its Therapeutic Recreation Program, Aurora offers developmentally delayed individuals a year-round specialized program featuring activities that enhance their skills, augment and expand social, cognitive, affective and physical abilities, and allow them to leave the confines of their homes and experience the world in a whole new way. The program provides door-to-door transportation, the major barrier to their participation, and is the only metro-area therapeutic recreation program offering pick up and drop off as part of the program. By providing well-planned, engaging, and age-appropriate recreational activities in the larger community setting for people with disabilities, the community as a whole has begun to see the abilities of participants rather than just their disabilities.
