Arlington County has a long tradition of civic engagement and believes it is a critical component to community success. PLACE (People, Leadership, and Civic Engagement) was launched in 2012 to further Arlington County’s emphasis on citizen participation through engaging all voices in the community. PLACE had three major goals of expanding participation, training, and improvement. This case study captures the work of the PLACE working group of residents and staff and highlights some of the infrastructure building steps that PLACE has accomplished, and includes recommendations for next steps. Many of the tools and approaches PLACE has developed are already finding their way into decision-making and policy processes in Arlington. More people are being involved, at earlier stages of each process. More voices are being heard in more ways.
