Assalamualaikum and Salam Sejahtera,

In order to promote a healthy lifestyle under sustainable environment, city of Oak Ridge came with an idea to combine walkaways and bicycle paths along natural corridors; GREENWAYS. It is connected and have a length about 104 miles. Impressive and Good job!

Concept (From Greenways site: click here)

The Oak Ridge Greenways project is an effort to weave natural corridors through the City to community resources such as parks, schools, cultural centers, shopping areas, and areas of employment. The greenways are founded on three principles. First, where possible, the greenways follow natural corridors such as floodway zones or existing right-of-ways thus reducing conflicts with private land holdings. Second, the greenways are conceived as interconnected loops. Finally, the greenways are conceptually designed to connect those areas and resources which are of value to Oak Ridgers and which distinguish Oak Ridge as a special place in which to live. These areas include the striking natural landscape of the city, its neighborhoods, schools, parks, cultural facilities, and places of work and commerce.

My experience

I love the idea of Greenways along the lake and river/creek. It gives passenger opportunity to connect with nature. I and my partner experience the Greenways with Roseanne (our homestay host during YSEALI Professional Exchange Program).

We walked around 1.5km (around 1 mile) one way to Melton Lake. We were excited when we found few species of birds and trees. Roseanne showed us many type of wild flower like ester and knotweed (of cource we don't have back in our hometown). There were also many fish by the mangrove tree and squirrel climb on the tree for nut.

After we reach of the end of the route, we use the same path going back home. Another 1.5km. Yeay! 5000 steps counted and thousand of calories already burned! It was wonderful and takes only one and half hour return.

I hope Malaysia could have something like this back in our country. Although Malaysia experience hot and humid throughout the year, we still have many connected rivers and creek and maybe we can make use of that to promote healthy lifestyle, as well as to get connected with nature.

See you in the next post readers!

Love,

Aliya,
