While there are more women and minorities in MPA programs and working in the public sector than ever before, they remain underrepresented in management and leadership roles. ICMA continues to work on improving diversity within the profession, and this year we are expanding existing programs and implementing member recommendations to change this reality. To attract and cultivate a diverse and talented group of individuals as the next generation of local government management leaders, ICMA and its members will be providing additional resources to our chapters on these topics with new speakers, mentors, and projects.

ICMA Student Chapters are Now Free!

If your school does not have an ICMA Student Chapter, go here to learn how you can start one today.

By establishing an ICMA Student Chapter, universities and colleges provide unlimited student membership to all students enrolled in the chapter. Schools, students or members interested in starting a chapter can e-mail careers@icma.org for details, or download the agreement and sample charter to begin the process now by visiting icma.org/startastudentchapter.

Start taking advantage of ICMA chapter content and activities, including chapter specific webinars or audio conferences and chapter contests using case studies and data sets to help students apply their knowledge from the classroom to real-world problems and solutions. Chapters engage their members by bringing in guest speakers, participating in small consulting projects for nearby local governments (a good resume builder!), making presentations to undergraduates or high schools about local government, civics, or other topics of interest, and holding networking roundtables and dinners.
