From March 2 to April 2, ICMA Corporate Members had an opportunity to vote on new language for Tenet 12 of the ICMA Code of Ethics proposed by the ICMA Committee on Professional Conduct. The proposed language overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 2,144 in favor of the proposal to 152 voting against it.

Thanks to all members who took the time to cast a vote. Special thanks to the Tenet 12 Canvassing Committee, who verified the votes at ICMA headquarters on April 6. Committee members were:

  • Nelsie Birch, director, management and budget, Alexandria, VA
  • Stevie Cox, town administrator, Capitol Heights, MD
  • John Thompson, executive director, Office on Aging, Washington, DC.

Tenet 12 of the ICMA Code of Ethics now reads: Public office is a public trust. A member shall not leverage his or her position for personal gain or benefit.

Updated versions of the ICMA Code of Ethics suitable for framing will be available in late May.
