Worksite fitness centers are becoming more common because employers see value in them. Worksite health clinics are gaining popularity because employers are realizing the potential in them too. PM magazine’s July cover story “The Promising Potential of Worksite Health Clinics,” can help managers decide if an onsite clinic is right for their local governments.

Authors Mary Eleanor Wickersham, assistant professor at the College of Coastal Georgia, and a noted expert on health care, and Robert (Sherman) Yehl, assistant professor at Valdosta State University and a former city manager, write that clinics may be able to help control health care costs, but they could require preplanning and changes in current service delivery.

They fully outline these factors in the article:

  • Operations planning
  • Minimum potential participants
  • Location
  • Range of services
  • Issuing a request for proposal
  • Employee engagement
  • Return on investment metrics.
