Congratulations to Chase Carlile, budget analyst, Mesa, Arizona, who submitted the correct answer for the May ICMA 100th Anniversary Trivia Quiz!

The May question was “What ICMA international member held distinction as the first international ICMA president and the only ICMA president to serve two consecutive terms, and what was his home country? Clue: This individual took office as president of ICMA after the U.S. Great Depression.”

The answer is J. R. French of Canada, who, because of World War II, was the only ICMA president to serve two consecutive, one-year terms (1944 and 1945).

The June ICMA Anniversary Trivia Quiz covers the early years of the profession through four questions:

  1. What was the first city to establish a professional manager’s position and in what year was that position established?
  2. What was the first city to adopt by a vote of the people a charter incorporating the basic principles of council-manager government and in what year was the charter adopted?
  3. What was the first Canadian city to introduce the council-manager form to Canada and in what year?;
  4. What was the first county to adopt the council-manager form and in what year?

Clue: The four responses span three decades: the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s.

Because of the complexity of this month’s quiz, the first member to respond with the correct answer to all four questions will win an ICMA-anniversary-branded “fun pack,” which includes a 100th anniversary-branded duckbill cap, a 16-oz. branded Tervis cup, a 24-oz. branded Tervis cup, and an anniversary mug.
