ICMA is pleased to highlight this month’s member benefit, the latest video in the Leading Ideas Series.  ICMA Executive Director Bob O’Neill sits down with Jim Collins and discusses his most recent book, Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos and Luck – Why Some Thrive Despite Them All. Collins' presentation, “Good to Great: Not Just for the Private Sector” at ICMA’s 2006 Annual Conference in San Antonio holds the honor of being one of the highest-rated keynote sessions in the conference’s history. He was also a keynoter at ICMA’s 98th Annual Conference in Phoenix/Maricopa County, in October 2012.

During this interview, Collins describes the characteristics of leaders and organizations that thrive in uncertain and disruptive environments and those that do not. Through empirical research, Collins illustrates that in the midst of chaos and forces beyond our control, great leaders are not necessarily any bolder, any more prone to risk-taking, or even more creative than average leaders; instead, great leaders are set apart by how they manage innovation, how they control their risk-taking, and how they exhibit discipline and self-control in order to be successful.

Watch the interview in its entirety to learn more about applying these behaviors to your every-day work in your communities. All interviews in the Leading Ideas series are available to you as an exclusive ICMA member benefit at icma.org/leadingideas and can be accessed for streaming at any time from any kind of device. They are also available in HD for large screen viewing.
