On Novemeber 14, 2014, a public lecture on integrated waste management was held at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, Batumi, Adjara region.

To publicize the event, a contest centered on waste management issues was held. About 15 people participated and winners were awarded with reusable bags.

Preceding the lecture, three recycling bins for the collection of paper, plastic, and organic waste were installed at Batumi State University. The Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) program team welcomed the audience and thanked them for their interest and participation. They emphasized the importance of introducing youth to integrated waste management practices at the local level and the need for behavioral changes crucial to positive outcomes.

Other topics discussed during the lecture include: classification of waste, the concept of integrated waste management, the concept of the 4Rs, waste collection systems, waste separation, recycling, landfills and their types, international standards of landfill arrangement, and a comparison of Gregorian landfills with landfills developed based on international standards.

Following the lecture, there was a discussion on the current system of waste management (collection, transportation, disposal) and the practice of waste separation in the region.

Attendees were also interested in the ways the program will work with youth groups in target regions and its future plans. The program team shared information on upcoming events, competitions, and grants.

Approximately 40 people participated in the lecture. It was organized in the framework of the USAID funded program Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR). The program is implemented through CityLinks by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and its local partner, CENN.
