2013-14 ICMA President Simon Farbrother recorded this interview for the membership while attending the 2014 Southeast Regional Summit in Williamsburg, Virginia. During this interview, Simon responded to questions about the needs of our communities, the next 100 years, the 100th Anniversary, students, and the next generation. Some key take-aways include:

  • Professional local government managers need to position themselves to thrive in an environment of rapid change.
  • Among the skills managers especially need to develop are facilitation skills.
  • To help build the next generation of managers, ICMA members need to engage with academic programs.
  • Leadership is the critical component for the next 100 years of ICMA; Edmonton established 40 memberships with ICMA as an experiment, which led to cross pollination of ideas.
