The Hampton/NASA Steam Plant is working with Newport News Shipbuilding to make the Peninsula even more environmentally responsible.

The shipyard is starting a new, company-wide program to increases the amount of shipyard trash that is taken to the plant, burns and turns into steam through a process known as “waste-to-energy.”

The plant burns up to 240 tons of trash a day to help power various facilities at NASA Langley. Built more than 30 years ago, the award-wining plant has partnerships with Poquoson, local federal agencies and private businesses like the shipyard.
