The ICMA Code of Ethics is an evolving document. Ensuring that the Code remains relevant to the profession is a key responsibility of the ICMA Executive Board and the Committee on Professional Conduct (CPC). To that end, ICMA is launching a structured review of the Code and will be looking at one tenet per year.

The process begins with a review of Tenet 7. We started here because the principle of political neutrality outlined in Tenet 7 is the foundation of the profession, and also the tenet that generates the most inquiries and ethics violations.

Members are invited to provide feedback here. The discussion will close on May 15 June 22.

Members will have several opportunities--at regional summits, state meetings, a webinar, and via social media outlets--to provide input on the tenet and related guideline. Once member input has been obtained, the CPC will make a recommendation on whether changes should be made to the tenet and/or guidelines and the process for making the changes.
