The American Public Works Association selected the City of Coon Rapids for its 2016 Sustainability Practices Award in recognition of the city’s “outstanding contribution to promote sustainability.”

Sustainability in public works means seeking a “balanced approach” and is achieved by the “efficient delivery of infrastructure in an environmentally and socially responsible way that ensures the best choice in the long term.” Coon Rapids meets these goals by practicing sustainability measures such as stormwater management, recycling, water conservation and alternative energy sources.

Judges considered three categories in determining award winners: economy (economic development and financial stability), community (education, safety, enjoyment and livability) and environment (pollution prevention or cleanup, natural resources use and conservation and energy efficiency).

The City of Coon Rapids works in partnership with members of the Coon Rapids Sustainability Commission to further sustainable practices in the city. Created in 2008, the Sustainability Commission researches ideas and options for sustainable living within the city of Coon Rapids. This includes reviewing current practices as well as working with the Coon Rapids City Council on various proposals for city building designs. The Commission focuses its attention on issues that impact energy and water use, building materials, waste management and recycling.
