Government is in the business of serving the public, it must work to build trust among its partners and local residents. What’s more, government must do this in a world where those residents are used to incorporating online interaction to build confidence. Couple that with the fact that trust in government is at a low point, and you’ve got a real challenge. However, we know that when it’s done right, online civic engagement can indeed turn the tides. Simply put, it’s time to take a page from the business playbook and revolutionize the way government builds trust with its residents. We’ll tell you exactly how that can be achieved through this workshop:

How to Build Public Trust through Online Citizen Engagement
ICMA University Workshop
Saturday, September 26 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM

How do local governments plan and execute an online citizen engagement strategy? The inputs from citizens and other stakeholders can easily overwhelm your staff given the increasing number of channels--social media, email lists, online portals, etc.,--that local governments are expected to operate. This workshop will give you ideas for how to listen to your constituents without overwhelming your staff. You'll also learn how to facilitate an online discussion without violating free speech requirements. The workshop will also suggest strategies for involving elected officials and how to gauge public opinion from the online conversation. Addresses Practice Groups 2, 4, 7, 9
