The Town of Stowe is seeking an experienced and collaborative Finance Director to serve as chief financial officer who will lead the Town’s finance team and be an integral part of the municipality’s leadership team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a municipal finance professional who wants to do more than manage numbers. What You’ll Do
As Finance Director, you will provide leadership and oversight for the Town’s financial operations, including:
• Lead the Town’s financial management and help ensure its long-term fiscal health and sustainability.
• Ensure compliance with GASB, GAAP, applicable laws and regulations, and Town financial policies and procedures.
• Lead the development, administration, monitoring, and reporting of the Town’s annual operating and capital budgets.
• Prepare and present financial reports, analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to Town leadership and other stakeholders.
• Provide financial information and analysis to support strategic planning and informed decision-making.
• Coordinate and participate in the Town’s annual audit process, including preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation.
• Provide oversight of payroll, accounts payable, and other core financial processes.
• Monitor revenues, expenditures, cash flow, investments, and other key financial indicators.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen financial controls, improve processes, and increase operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with department heads, elected officials, staff, auditors, and community stakeholders on financial matters.
• Serve as a trusted financial advisor to Town leadership while promoting transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of public resources.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a finance professional who combines strong technical accounting skills with sound judgment, communication skills, and a commitment to public service.
Candidates should have:
• A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting or financial management experience; governmental or municipal accounting experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting, including GASB and GAAP.
• Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial analysis, forecasting, and audit preparation.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial/business software.
• Experience with NEMRC municipal software is a plus.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• The ability to explain complex financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.
• A collaborative approach and the ability to establish effective working relationships across an organization.

The Town of Stowe is a full-service municipality that operates under the Council/Manager form of government. Departments include Administration, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Town Clerk, Planning & Zoning, Lister, Public Works, Water, Wastewater, Highway, Library, Parks & Recreation including an Arena, and public safety with Police, Fire Rescue and Mountain Rescue. The Town of Stowe has a workforce of 82 full-time employees and approximately 80 part-time emergency services and seasonal personnel. It has a General Fund Budget of $19 million, a Water Fund Budget of $1.5 Million, and a Sewer Fund Budget of $2.5 million. In addition, it has several capital reserve funds.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $90,000–$130,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
