Athenian Program

What Makes Athenian Different?

The challenges facing local government today require leaders who can think creatively, act decisively, and inspire others to work toward the common good. The Athenian Program provides the philosophical foundation, practical skills, and a professional network to help you meet these challenges.

Monica Spells, deputy county manager, Loudoun County Virgina, describes the Athenian Program as “a laboratory where introspection, creativity, fellowship, learning, philosophy, relaxation, and teamwork mix and reveal to participants new considerations for thinking, leading, and living.”

Unlike traditional leadership training, the Athenian Program goes beyond technical skills to address deeper questions that define effective leadership in today's complex world.  The program is intended for managers and assistants/deputies with more than 10 years of continuous local government service.

The program is peer-designed and delivered by experienced local government leaders and managers who understand the challenges and opportunities in today’s environment. It provides an opportunity for participants to renew their passion for local government leadership, connect with colleagues from diverse locations, and define the legacy they want to leave in their communities.

Participants have found the Athenian Program to be impactful in meaningful ways and report that the strong alumni network and ongoing professional relationships provide support, mentoring, and problem-solving resources for the rest of their careers and beyond.

Jeffrey A. Fiegenschuh, city manager of Rochelle, Illinois, shares: "The Athenian program changed my life! It renewed my commitment to the profession and showed me how to be more effective in my role.”
