Director of Planning and Development

The City of Newark is seeking a dynamic and collaborative leader to serve as its Director of Planning and Development. Newark is a diverse, vibrant university community close to the metro areas of Philadelphia, PA and Baltimore, MD that continues to establish itself as a progressive, small city while being home to the University of Delaware. The city is approximately nine square miles, and, as demonstrated in its Comprehensive Plan, possesses all types of land use, transportation requirements, and exceedingly active development and redevelopment. Reporting directly to the City Manager, this is a management-level position responsible for direction and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Land Use, Code Enforcement, and Parking divisions. This position also works directly with the Planning Commission and plays a leadership role with respect to development and implementation of the City’s Comprehensive Development Plan.
The successful candidate should have five (5) to ten (10) years of management experience with increasing responsibilities and ideally five (5) years of direct land use and/or planning experience. Experience with Delaware land use laws preferred.
Upon hire, the successful candidate will earn a salary in the range of $98,339 to $135,879 commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications. The position comes with excellent fringe benefits and professional development opportunities.
