Planner I / II, Senior Planner

City of Ocala, FL

The Planning Department is seeking qualified internal candidates interested in supporting the City’s development review, long range planning, public engagement, and board coordination efforts. These roles contribute directly to implementing the Comprehensive Plan, supporting advisory boards, and ensuring high-quality development throughout the City.

Key Responsibilities (vary by level):
• Review zoning, land use, annexation, variance, and site plan applications
• Prepare staff reports, technical comments, and related documentation
• Conduct specialized planning studies (land use, traffic, housing, utilities, economic base)
• Review traffic studies and collaborate with internal departments
• Process tree removal applications per the City’s Tree Preservation Code
• Provide staff support to City boards and commissions
• Develop maps, analyze data, and maintain planning databases
• Respond to inquiries from residents, consultants, government agencies, and internal staff
• Assist with grant identification, applications, and administration
• Support updates and implementation of the Comprehensive Plan

Senior Planner Additional Responsibilities:
• Present cases and reports to advisory boards and City Council
• Supervise Planner I and II positions and support staff coordination
• Prepare notices, packets, and board materials
• Draft and revise Land Development Regulations
• Manage complex projects including annexations, rezonings, subdivisions, PUDs, and long-range planning studies

Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED (required)
• Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, geography, public administration, or related field
• Master’s degree preferred
• Minimum one year of related experience or equivalent combination of education
