Reporting to the County Administrator, the Senior Deputy County Administrator is responsible for managing administrative, budgetary, and financial activities and programs of operating departments. This Senior Deputy County Administrator will have primary responsibility for monitoring the programmatic and fiscal activities of the Public Protection functional area which includes the following criminal justice departments: Office of the Sheriff, District Attorney, Public Defender and Criminal Conflict Defense, Probation and Fire Districts. S/he will provide staff support for the Board of Supervisor's Public Protection Committee which was established to examine and make recommendations on issues relating to public protection services provided through the County's criminal justice, fire protection, emergency services and animal service programs.

In addition to coordinating the activities of the criminal justice departments to meet mandates or program objectives; the Senior Deputy will supervise the review, analysis and monitoring of their budgets and review and/or prepare budget recommendations. The Senior Deputy CAO will evaluate program area requirements and operations including staffing, organization, furnishings, equipment and building facilities; develop workload measurements and supporting data for budget requests, program alternatives, funding options and resultant service delivery implications; and supervise the analysis of budget requests and proposed organizational changes received from operating departments. Further, the Senior Deputy will attend Board of Supervisors' budget hearings and assist in the review process; participate in meetings of the Board of Supervisors, other boards, commissions, groups and County officials regarding budget, finance, and other matters; furnish advice and information to the County Administrator, County officials and others; and supervise subordinate staff.
