Located in western Washington at the foot of majestic Mount Rainier, Pierce County has a population of approximately 850,000, and is one of the largest and fastest growing counties in the state. The Pierce County Human Resources Department operates with 25.8 FTE’s on a 2018 budget of $4.53 million, and provides a wide range of human resource management functions and administers a comprehensive merit-based personnel management system. Under the direction of the County Executive, the Human Resources Director is responsible for the overall administration of all human resource functions, including planning and delivering a broad range of human resource services and support activities for 3,084 county employees. The Director is responsible for managing workforce planning, recruitment and placement, classification and compensation, employee engagement and recognition, leave and benefit administration, labor relations and collective bargaining, performance management, organizational development and training, diversity and inclusion, and records management and reports.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in human resource management, public administration, or a closely related field. Candidates must have 6 years of directly related supervisory experience, including extensive experience in recruitment and placement; diversity programs; job analysis, description and classification; workforce planning; labor and employee relations, including grievance procedures and disciplinary review; and benefit planning and administration. Experience may come from the public sector, or from a combination of the public and private sectors.
