The City of Newport News is located on the eastern coast of Virginia and occupies 69.2 square miles. Newport News is the fourth largest city by acreage and the fifth largest city by population in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The City provides a full range of municipal services, including fire and police protection, juvenile detention, adult correction, sanitation, health and social services, public improvements, planning and zoning, water/wastewater services, general administrative services, education, recreational activities, cultural events, and the construction and maintenance of highways, streets and infrastructure. The City is seeking candidates for the position of Fire Chief who will provide leadership for the Fire Department and is responsible for developing and administering programs and systems to support and promote high-performance strategies to meet the organizational mission, vision, and values. The Fire Chief reports to the Assistant City Manager and oversees the administrative and operations divisions which include Fire Suppression, the Fire Marshal’s Office, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management, and Administrative Support. The Fire Chief must have strong communication, interpersonal, and teambuilding skills. Requirements include any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Fire, Public, or Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field and ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience to include five (5) years supervisory and management experience as a Chief Officer. Chief Fire Officer (CFO) or Executive Fire Officer (EFO) certification preferred; experience in emergency medical care is highly desired. The starting salary is open, dependent upon qualifications.
