General Purpose

Provides economic development and redevelopment planning, marketing and research work in support of the City's Economic Development Strategic plan. Responsibilities include coordinating and implementing projects and programs that support commercial, office and industrial development; business attraction; business retention; development of public facilities and infrastructure; small business development initiatives; and other economic development, redevelopment or capital improvement programs or projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

•Performs economic development and support work to broaden the City's retail, commercial, and industrial base.

•Works closely with the Arizona Department of Commerce, Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC), Maricopa Chamber of Commerce, and other strategic alliance partners to support and promote the City to various business clients.

•Prepares reports on economic development and redevelopment activities for advisory boards, and City Council;

•Staffs or serves as City liaison to citizen committees, non-profit organizations, special interest groups, and neighborhood groups concerning economic development issues and problems; makes presentations to these groups as assigned.

•Plans and staffs economic and development events and programs.

•Responds to requests for information from business prospects, and assists potential new business in site selection; coordinates key activities to facilitate the location process through the Cities Business Assistance Team.

•Influences and builds relationships with prospects, consultants, company decision makers, and media information sources; solicits development proposals from private development companies; establishes and strengthens relationships with local businesses.

•Designs a variety of promotional/marketing materials for the purposes of business attraction and retention; develops and maintains files, records, databases, listings, and other reference materials used to recruit and retain businesses, including business trends, demographic profiles, and related materials.

•Executes and manages the day to day activities of the Economic Development marketing plan


Education and Experience

•A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in urban planning, economic development, marketing, public or business administration or a related field.

•At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, marketing, business attraction, community development, planning or a related field.

•Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS •Certified Economic Developer (CEcD)

•Municipal experience

Licenses or Certifications

•Possession of (or ability to obtain within 1 month of hire) a standard driver license


Regular out of state travel is required to attend trade shows, generate leads, and business prospecting. Irregular hours are required to support evening and weekend programs and events.
