Commerce City, CO (Pop. 53,696) - The City of Commerce City is located on 35.73 square miles; 61 plus square miles at total build-out in Adams County immediately northeast of Denver and west of the Denver International Airport. Commerce City, a Home Rule Community, is governed by a Mayor elected at-large and eight City Council members, four elected at-large and four by ward. City Charter provides for a Council-manager form of government. The City Manager has been in position for over five years.
Centrally located along Colorado’s bustling Front Range, Commerce City has 25 miles of trails, a championship golf course, 840 acres of open space and parks, one of the country’s largest soccer complexes and the nation’s largest urban wildlife refuge. The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and enhancing all public infrastructure of the City through oversight of all municipally owned facilities and infrastructure. The Public Works Department is charged with the maintenance of the City’s streets including snow removal, street cleaning, pot-hole patching, crack sealing, traffic maintenance, bridge maintenance and special events. Engineering services include planning, design and construction management of capital projects; development review and inspection; traffic & transportation engineering and coordination, Colorado Discharge Permit System administration, mapping and drafting services; and right-of-way research and mapping. The garbage and recycling service contract is administered within the department. Additionally, the department is responsible for maintaining the fleet of the City as well as the facilities owned and operated by the City. The Department has 50 allocated full-time employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $8.1M with another $1.9M in the Facility Services Fund and $4.3M in the Fleet Service Fund in the FY18 budget. The non-exempt employees within the department are represented by AFSCME.
The City is looking for:
• A strong commitment to creative problem-solving through teamwork and professionalism, outstanding supervisory and administrative skills, and highly developed interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
• A demonstrated record of team-oriented style leadership with a comprehensive knowledge of facility, fleet, and street maintenance; drainage; infrastructure design; and the ability to facilitate the development of a strong solutions based, community service-focused department.
• An ability to facilitate a mindset change in employees to empower them to form a teamwork approach to departmental goals and responsibilities and to encourage them to offer creative ideas for advancing the mission of the department and presenting problem solving ideas.
• Extensive experience in Public Works and a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, public administration, public policy, business administration or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree is preferred. Seven to 10 years of progressively responsible public sector public works management, or public administrative or managerial experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience, is desired. Experience in a larger community at the assistant department head level will also be considered. A Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation is welcome, but not required.

The anticipated hiring salary is $121,315 -$141,064 DOQ with excellent benefits. Residency is not required.
