The Director oversees all operations of the City’s Department of Planning and Economic Development enriching the quality of community life by directing and coordinating diverse organizational responsibilities, staff and contractors in widely varied activities pertaining to community planning, land use development and regulation, economic growth, culture, recreation and human services. The Director provides advanced professional managerial and administrative work in planning, managing, supervising and directing activities which foster great ideas, discoveries and ultimately innovations of economic development and community development functions.
The Director and his/her team develops and implements short and long-term planning initiatives that align with the City’s strategic priorities including those related to strong neighborhoods; oversees the preparation and/or revision of ordinances and other policies related to land use, land development, business and economic development issues; and works to maintain relationships with public and private organizations involved in the department’s work. These services support the City's planning board and other selected advisory boards, maintain City master plans and maps, and prepare operating, capital and special program budgets.
The Director specializes in innovation and redevelopment and has a deep understanding of and passion for innovation and creativity with proven experience bringing ideas from conception to completion leading and facilitating innovation by harnessing the creative energies of employees, residents and business partners to create new economic opportunities. The Director handles inquiries from both existing businesses looking for information about expansion and grants, and prospective businesses who would like to consider locating in the City of Newport. The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in the professional management of a wide variety in community planning, administrative services and economic development functions and in the resolution of administrative problems. Work is performed independently with general supervision by the City Manager.
