The Director of Planning for the City of Virginia Beach works closely with the City Manager, Deputy City Managers, elected officials, civic organizations, boards, and commissions, as well as businesses and other stakeholders, to create and sustain a diverse, thriving community.
Candidates with a demonstrated track record of consensus building, development of effective relationships, and strong leaderships skills are preferred. The next Director of Planning will be a strategic thinker with a diverse knowledge/experience in commercial and residential real estate, public-private partnerships, comprehensive planning, land use and urban design. S/he will be responsible for assisting the City in storm water management and combatting the impacts of sea level rise by establishing and enforcing related codes and representing the City’s position in various local, state and federal forums.
Key responsibilities associated with the position include: management and leadership of the Current Planning Division; Development Services Center; Permits & Inspections; Parking Management; Strategic Growth Office; and Zoning Administration. The Director of Planning serves as the strategic liaison to the Planning Commission, Chesapeake Preservation Board, Wetlands Board, Board of Zoning Appeals, and the Historic Preservation Commission. S/he will regularly interact with the boards and commissions as well as City Council, other department directors, business owners and citizens. Additionally, the director supervises the preparation and maintenance of the Comprehensive Plan, including the incorporation of City Strategic Growth Area initiatives, and provides oversight to the City’s adherence of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC).
