The City of Long Beach invites you to join an organization committed to using technology to help deliver the best possible services to one of the most diverse communities in the country. If you are a professional who embraces an organizational culture of innovation and continuous process improvement, we hope you will consider this outstanding career opportunity to join the executive team of our progressive Southern California city. Long Beach (pop. 485,000) is ideally located on the Pacific coast just south of Los Angeles and adjacent to Orange County. The City is a perfect blend of seaside resort, urban metropolis with a diverse economy, and a tapestry of small neighborhoods whose international cultures are woven into a tightly knit yet heterogeneous community.
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is one of the premier parks and recreation departments in the country and is consistently recognized for excellence in management practices and programs, having received the Gold Medal Award four times. The Department operates over 170 parks with 26 community centers, two historic sites, two major tennis centers, an animal shelter, one of the busiest municipal golf systems in the country with five courses, and the largest municipally operated marina system in the nation with over 3,336 boat slips and six miles of beaches. Other unique sites include multiple community gardens, a municipal cemetery, over 38 miles of bike trails, ten dog parks, and eight skate parks. Department resources include 440 FTEs (equating to over 1,000 full-time and part-time employees), and an operating budget of over $55 million.
Appointed by the City Manager, the Director plans, organizes, and coordinates all programs, functions and activities of the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department. The Director oversees a talented staff, including six direct reports, while working collaboratively to create a vibrant and ‘livable’ city. The ideal candidate will bring innovation, enthusiasm, motivation, and a professional and engaging leadership style that embraces healthy living, team work, and excellent communication, with a demonstrated ability to create and build successful business relationships.
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least seven years of experience in recreation and community programs, at least five of which have been in a management capacity in a related functional area are required; Master’s degree and experience with a commensurate sized city are desirable. The City offers a comprehensive benefits package.
