Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation seeks a visionary leader for their next Director. About Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation:
The Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation is one of 13 departments and has 60 full-time and up to 150 part-time employees with an operating budget of $6.3M and over $10.M in planned capital improvements. Through the Master Plan, the Department plans, organizes, and conducts a diverse system of recreational, cultural, and athletic programs. The Department also plans and maintains park facilities and grounds, including lakes, trails and athletic fields. Reporting to the Town Manager, the Director also works with The Chapel Hill Parks, Recreation and Greenways Commission. Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation operates over 50 facilities, including 14 neighborhood parks, 13.4 miles of greenways and natural surface trails, 4 swimming pools (3 indoor pools), 3 recreation centers, 20 tennis courts, and 4 municipal cemeteries. The Department has three divisions: Park Maintenance, Recreation, and Administrative Services, through which 1243 programs were offered serving over 7,500 patrons in 2018. The pools receive over 90,000 visits in a year and other Recreation facilities receive 45,000 visits a year.

Key priorities of the new Director will include: collaborating with staff to develop and implement plans to shape the department of the future with increasingly more retirements over the next 3-5 years in order to flexibly respond to changing trends and preferences in parks and recreation services; working with community partners such as other regional park systems, nonprofits, K-12 schools and universities as well as Town departments such as Housing, Public Safety and the Library, in order to deliver more effective programs to a larger audience; facilitating vision development and managing capital projects related to land that has been designated for parks and greenways; and, responding to community survey feedback to place more emphasis on the number of walking and biking trails, the maintenance of Town parks, and the quality of Town recreation programs for seniors.

The candidate’s work history must include well rounded experience across both parks and recreation divisions with five (5) or more years of successful and progressive levels of responsibility. Municipal parks and recreation experience and a bachelor’s degree are required while a relevant master’s degree and CPRP certification are strongly preferred.
