Director of Administrative Services, Atchison, KS (11,021) The City of Atchison, Kansas is seeking a creative, visionary professional to join its dynamic executive management team as the Director of Administrative Services. Located in Northeast Kansas, Atchison is a historic and progressive community that is nestled along the bluffs of the Missouri River and serves as the seat of Atchison County. Atchison is conveniently located on three major highways, is just 35 miles northwest of Kansas City International Airport, and is within an hour drive of downtown Kansas City, Lawrence, and the capitol city of Topeka. Atchison is home to Benedictine College, a 2,000 student Catholic university, the corporate headquarters of MGP Ingredients, a leading U.S. supplier of distilled alcohol products and specialty wheat proteins and starches, and the Bradken Foundry, one of the largest steel foundries in North America. Atchison has a rich history and has been home to many prominent figures, including aviation legend Amelia Earhart. Amelia’s birthplace home is now a museum that is one of many notable tourist attractions in Atchison, which also include the International Forest of Friendship, the Amelia Earhart Earthwork, and numerous other museums and historical landmarks.

Atchison is a full-service city that operates under the Commission-Manager form of government, with 107 full-time employees and an approximately $25 million annual budget, including capital projects. The Director of Administrative Services is an exempt position appointed by the City Manager that leads the finance and community development departments. This position provides planning and management of the personnel, programming, and services of the two departments. Key responsibilities of this position are supervision of personnel responsible for the various functions of finance, planning and zoning, and code enforcement, management of the annual budget development process, financial forecasting and planning, ongoing monitoring of City’s finances, and public communications. The Administrative Services Director is a member of the City’s executive level staff which also includes the Assistant City Manager, Police Chief, Fire Chief, Public Works Director, and Human Resources Director.

In addition to having three to five years of personnel management experience, the ideal candidate for this position understands government finance and city administration, has an outgoing personality, exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to customer service excellence. This position serves in a variety of leadership roles in the community and the ideal candidate is a dedicated public servant with a passion for community betterment. A bachelor’s degree in public administration, finance, business, management or a similar discipline is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
