The Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department is seeking qualified candidates to be considered for the position of Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation - Parks Division who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.
Located in west Central Virginia at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the City of Charlottesville is 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1762, the City is 10.4 square miles with a population of approximately 49,000 residents, within a metropolitan statistical area of over 200,000. The starting salary will be between $70,532.80 and $106,680.00 annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, exempt, position.
The City has a full-service and award-winning Parks and Recreation Department, managing a large and complex system of parks and recreational facilities serving residents across all spectrums of age, income and ability. The Department is seeking its next Deputy Director, and desires an innovative, collaborative and visionary leader to build upon the Department's success and continue to pursue constant improvement across all aspects of service delivery. The Deputy Director will provide direction and oversight to mission critical and department-wide operations, safety and business functions, including (but not limited to) financial management, human resource management, relationship management, reporting and analysis and strategic initiative management. The new Deputy Director, among other responsibilities, will directly manage the day-to-day operations of the Parks Division of the Department. Performs related work as required.
The ideal candidate will have a proven record visioning and implementing innovative solutions to complex issues, as well as extensive experience in land management, park and recreational facility maintenance, capital planning, design and development, community engagement and change management. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess traits that provide for resiliency, creativity, and flexibility as well as high levels of self-motivation.
•Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university appropriate to the functional area (recreation, park management, business administration, etc.);
•Six years of administrative experience in the appropriate functional area in a diverse and full service municipal parks and recreation system or related field, with a minimum of 3 of those years at the supervisory or managerial level;
•Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia by employment start date.
•Master's degree preferred;
•Certified Playground Safety Inspector; Certified Facility Manager; Certified Park and Recreation Professional or Executive; Certified Pool Operator or Aquatics Facility Operator, and National Accreditation Visitor certification preferred.
