Summary

Located in the upper peninsula of Michigan on the St. Mary’s River, which connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron through a lock system, the City of Sault Ste. Marie (SSM) is seeking a dynamic administrator who will thrive in a small-town environment with year-round outdoor recreation. The city has an international flavor with its link to Ontario, Canada and the adjacent, larger metropolitan area via the International Bridge. Interstate 75 begins in the Sault and provides a direct, high-speed connection to lower Michigan, with Detroit being less than a five-hour drive.

Small-town charm and natural beauty provide for a friendly city, where residents feel safe and secure. The city is the county seat for Chippewa County and home to a U.S. Coast Guard Station. The SSM public school system is highly regarded and provides a quality education for the area’s youth. The waterfront views, abundance of city parks and recreational programs, and numerous events throughout the year make for a high quality of life for Sault residents.

Sault Ste. Marie is a full-service, commission-manager city with 14,000 residents, which hosts a large contingent of vacationers and has a classic downtown district. The city operates water and wastewater treatment plants. Its general fund budget is over $12 million with a 27 percent fund balance. When all funds are combined, the 2019-2020 annual budget totals $27 million.

Home to compassionate, caring residents, Sault Ste. Marie is looking for an approachable and energetic executive to provide leadership in strengthening relationships across all segments of the community and to continue moving the city forward. The city will offer a competitive compensation package which will include a starting salary within the range of $95,000 to $115,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
