Assistant City Manager

City of Garden City, KS

The City of Garden City is seeking an Assistant City Manager to join the organization’s Senior Management Team. The position reports to the City Manager and will oversee a collection of departments based on organizational needs. The Assistant City Manager also will be assigned a variety of special projects and assignments and serve as Acting City Manager in the absence of the City Manager.

The City of Garden City is a full-service city with over 370 employees and a 2022 annual operating budget of $173 million. Garden City, with a population of approximately 31,000, is the largest City in the western half of Kansas and operates under the Commission-Manager form of government as defined under Kansas State Statutes for City’s of the First Class. The current City Manager has been in the position since 2008 and is the third City Manager since 1953.

Garden City is part of a strong and growing southwest Kansas agricultural economy and boast many public and commercial amenities found in much larger communities. The historically diverse community is home to a wide variety of cultural celebrations, food, and entertainment offerings.

Education, Certification, and Experience:
A college degree in public administration, business, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. Three years of experience in a supervisory position in municipal government. Valid Kansas driver’s license. With being able to Achieve a Certified Public Manager license within five years of employment.
