The City of Rocky Mount has incredible stories to tell and a diverse audience of about 55,000 residents between two counties. The director will set the City’s communication strategy from both an organizational and departmental level. Lead a team of 3 communications and digital content professionals that work on communications for the organization’s programs and initiatives, brand identity, and education and engagement opportunities. Develop, manage, and execute key communications priorities, partnering cross-functionally to capture, enhance, and share compelling stories across multiple platforms that highlight City’s impacts across the region.
As a member of the City Manager’s leadership team, the Communications Director will inform agency-wide strategic direction and initiatives and interpret their implementation within the Communications department. Lead the development and implementation of a strategic vision for the department, evaluating Communications team structure to better align communications resourcing and expertise across the City.
Demonstrated experience and leadership skills in advancing racial equity, diversity and inclusion in their field of practice. Champion the City’s values, strategies and objectives as they relate to racial equity in the way we tell our story and the partnerships we build. Adept at navigating complex issues and leading various stakeholders to find equitable consensus and outcomes. Show enthusiasm, creativity, and passion for communicating and sharing narratives, with expert writing skills and a keen eye for detail. Extensive knowledge and understanding of the communications discipline, practices, and techniques, including communications platforms, channels and creative content generation. Strong understanding of how to leverage digital tools and social media for effective content creation, engagement and influence.
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field from an accredited university;
• 5 years of progressively responsible Communications and marketing experience; 2 years of which have been in a management or supervisory role; OR
Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job duties and responsibilities.
• Valid N.C. Driver’s License is required.
