To reduce the number of youth from entering the adult correctional system, Los Angeles County is offering an internship program to older teenagers leaving probation camps. This Youth Opportunity Program was developed by the Probation and Public Works Departments and was designed to be replicable for other communities.
Though the program is still new, officials have noted success with early participants, who work with on-site mentors. Along with learning trade skills, participants also develop skills like teamwork and communication that will help them find success in their careers and personal lives going forward.
Los Angeles County’s Youth Opportunity Program was the recipient of a 2016 CSAC Challenge Award. These awards recognize the most innovative and best practices in county government in California.
