Dear SGN Members:

This issue of Getting Smart! examines how the most public of places--our community's streets--can be transformed to serve not only vehicles but also pedestrians and cyclists. "Complete Streets," as such streets are called, offer many community benefits; check out Dom Nozzi's article, "Complete Streets Deliver Complete Communities," to learn more. Project for Public Spaces weighs in with guidelines for planning and designing great streets in "Community-based Street Design."

These benefits of and strategies for creating complete streets are highlighted in two case studies of successful local government initiatives in Decatur, Georgia, and Boulder, Colorado.

Enjoy!
