School/University Relations
Although schools are outside of the local government’s responsibility in many communities, schools and communities are mutually dependent. In addition to their primary education function, schools often provide places for community meetings, athletic activities, and neighborhood events. School traffic affects the community and school children on a lunch break affect nearby stores and restaurants. An important role for schools is to educate students about their local government, so they can become concerned, responsible citizens. For additional information on school curriculum for local government, see Citizen and Resident Participation.
