Vidin - West Carrollton, OH (Resource Cities)

The partnership between Vidin and West Carrollton focused on economic development and park development. One of the most successful outcomes of the partnership was the design and development of an Internet-based business information page in both English and Bulgarian. As part of the overall marketing efforts, the partners also outlined a marketing strategy for an industrial park for small and medium-sized businesses in Vidin. These efforts resulted in identifying the most strategically located land, developing the key characteristics for the park’s creation, and securing support from the Vidin business community. The Vidin and West Carrollton partners identified a good site for the industrial park near the access road to the proposed Danube bridge and very close to the existing ferry, and began identifying clients to target for the park. The industrial park will allow the municipality of Vidin to retain its existing businesses, encourage existing businesses to expand, and attract new businesses, thereby creating jobs for Vidin’s citizens.

The cooperation in park development was extremely beneficial to Vidin, providing planning, design, and management tools aimed at improving the Vidin Riverfront Park’s esthetics and utility. Using citizen input, the partners completed the conceptual design for the Danube Riverfront Park, providing a flexible development strategy for the next 5–10 years, and serving as a tool for managing annual budgets and applying for funds from external sources. In addition to collaborating on the conceptual design, the partners have committed to creating “friendship gardens” in the parks of both cities, and both cities’ Rotary Clubs have undertaken a fundraising campaign for redevelopment park. Some of the design ideas for the park, such as the Grande Entrance, have already been implemented. As a result of these activities, the park has been beautified, and the forthcoming park improvements will complete its transformation into a preferred place for rest and recreation for Vidin’s citizens.
