Hue - Honolulu, HI (Resource Cities)

Located in Central Vietnam, Hue is considered a cultural and tourist hub that was once the imperial capital.  It is rich in history, has great topographic beauty, and attracts major political and social events.  While Hue is known for its strength in scientific research, university training and culinary abilities, its location near the demilitarized zone has greatly shaped its history.

Hue became a center of protest and much of the city and architecture were destroyed during the Vietnam War.  In response to the war, Vietnam remained closed to tourism for many years.  Over time, however, Vietnam began loosening its travel restrictions, which affected Hue’s tourist industry.  In 1993, Hue was recognized as a World Cultural Heritage Site and funds became available to help restore the city.

The combination of Hue’s environmental resources and the desire to enhance the tourist industry was the basis for a partnership with Honolulu, Hawaii.  Honolulu’s experience in environmental preservation and tourism was particularly relevant to Hue.  The partnership addressed environmental protection, solid waste management, environmental education and development of a historic and ecological tourism industry.

Honolulu also shared its experience in collecting and recycling solid waste and provided composting training, solid waste management seminars, and samples of public education material relevant to the environment.
