Meet the 2011 Local Government Management Fellows

ICMA congratulates the 2011 Local Government Management Fellows and their host communities. Eleven communities are hosting 16 Fellows throughout the United States.

The LGMF is a highly competitive career-development opportunity designed to generate interest in local government careers among recent master's program graduates. ICMA, with partners NASPAA, NFBPA and IHN, manage a competitive recruitment and evaluation process to find top graduates with a passion for local government. Finalists compete for full-time management-track Fellowships, shaped by direct mentorship under senior government leaders and rotational assignments. ICMA recruits hosts to hire and mentor recent public administration/policy masters graduates in local government management 'apprenticeships' to prepare them to be tomorrow's city, county and town managers.

The Fellows began their assignments this past summer and met at the ICMA Annual Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for leadership training, coaching, in addition to the full conference content.

Please read Carl Stenberg's article on the LGMF in the August issue of PM Magazine to learn more about the history and success of the program to date. Of the program, current Fellow Paul Fagin says, “The Fellowship has been a great opportunity to build on my work experience and improve project management skills. I work on projects with department heads throughout our city, observe different management styles and techniques, and understand cross-cutting issues within our community that is preparing me for greater management roles.”

ICMA Needs You!

We are now seeking hosts for the 2012 Fellows! They'll be ready to start helping your community in summer 2012. If you are interested and have funding for a position, ICMA can help you place a top-ranked management Fellow to help you get some things done. For more information on hosting, please see our Host a Fellow section on icma.org/lgmf. There is also information about sharing a Fellow between two communities, to help reduce the cost on the Share a Fellow page.

If you have questions or would like to discuss hosting a Fellow, please email lgmfprogram@icma.org or call Rob Carty at (202) 962-3560.
