Public libraries play varied and dynamic roles in communities across the country. While their core mission remains information, literacy, and public education, public libraries can serve as a valuable asset in meeting a community’s strategic goals. According to a new report published by ICMA, Maximize the Potential of Your Public Library, some local government managers have partnered with their public libraries to address community needs in nontraditional areas such as public safety, economic development, literacy, environmental sustainability, and cultural diversity.

The new report and accompanying case studies provide examples and lessons learned from nine jurisdictions using their public libraries to develop innovative solutions for important strategic initiatives. Some of the findings in the report include:

1. Library and local government leaders need to connect on community priorities.

2. Building partnerships between local government managers and library directors is key to innovation.

3. Successful partnerships require commitment to the effort.

4. Innovation occurs in communities of all sizes.

5. Leadership happens at all levels of an organization.

6. Not every effort will be successful.

The report discusses these lessons learned in depth and offers ideas on how they can be put into action by others.
