ICMA Membership: Pass it On

Share your story of ICMA Membership

At a state association meeting, a council retreat, or over coffee with a colleague, your advice and encouragement can make all the difference in getting someone to understand the importance professional management and ICMA play in local governments.

Share your story about what ICMA membership and the profession have meant to you. For example:

  • How has ICMA benefited your career and community?
  • What has the professional network that ICMA offers meant to you personally and professionally?
  • What and who have been the greatest influences in your career?
  • What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?
What can I do?
  • Take a new administrator in your state out to coffee and share our First-Time Administrator’s Handbook.
  • Cover your staff’s ICMA dues, giving them the nationwide network and resources that will foster their growth and enhance the skills they bring to your organization.
  • Become a Legacy Leader, a program that recognizes credentialed managers who recruit emerging leaders. Or, sign the pledge to promote our Next Generation Initiatives so we can recognize your success.
  • Encourage the successor to a city or county manager or assistant manager in your area to join ICMA.
  • Speak at universities, high schools, or career fairs about how local government professionals make a difference every day. Visit icma.org/civicsed for civics education tips.
