Leadership in Interesting Times
Local government management professionals are constantly placed in difficult, awkward and conflict-laden situations. What are the interpersonal leadership fundamentals that are necessary to thrive and survive on the road that lies ahead? It is important to understand the different dimensions of leadership, how to recognize and address different leadership situations and the importance of judgment in resolving conflict. There is an inherent tension between an effective and efficient organization and the realities of politics. The leaders that drive successful outcomes will be capable of leading people and managing work through the inherent tension and ongoing ambiguity.

  • Duration: 45-75 minutes (discussion concerning adapting this presentation to 2.5 – 3 hours is possible)
  • ICMA Practice Areas: 1) Staff Effectiveness, 2) Policy Facilitation, 6) Initiative, Risk Taking, Vision, Creativity, and Innovation, 14) Advocacy and Interpersonal Communication, 18) Personal Development

The Relentless Pursuit of an Ethical Organizational Culture
Trust facilitates the democratic process. Building an ethical organizational culture requires an understanding of the importance of building trust relationships. It is important for leaders to understand the basics of trust, how groups and teams build trust and how to develop a personal and organizational platform for building
trust through ethical behavior and leadership with character. This presentation will explore these concepts in detail. As Mark Twain said, “Always do right, this will gratify some and astonish the rest”.

  • Duration: 60-120 minutes
  • ICMA Practice Areas: 1) Staff Effectiveness, 14) Advocacy and Interpersonal Communication, 17) Integrity, 18) Personal Development

Executive Presence - The Leadership "Wow" Factor

How leaders are perceived impacts their ability to drive successful outcomes. The presentation will include a discussion of the core characteristics of “Executive Presence”, the leadership “wow” factor, and the importance of how leaders are perceived. Executive Presence requires a deeper understanding of the importance of the concepts of vision and structure, emotions, applying power and trust. The concepts are based upon an article co-authored by Mr. Limardi that appeared in the June 2104 issue of Public Management Magazine.

  • Duration: 45-75 minutes
  • ICMA Practice Areas: 1) Staff Effectiveness, 2) Policy Facilitation, 6) Initiative, Risk Taking, Vision, Creativity, and Innovation, 14) Advocacy and Interpersonal Communication, 18) Personal Development

The Power of Personal Analytics
Former CEO of Baxter International Inc. and current professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University has said, “If you don’t know yourself, you cannot lead yourself. If you cannot lead yourself, you cannot lead others”. In order to know yourself, it is necessary to engage in personal analytics, learning what your critical strengths are and how they can used to lead others and manage complex and challenging work. Explore the results of critical strengths assessments of both public and private sector executives and how personal analytics can be critical to future success.

  • Duration: 45-75 minutes
  • ICMA Practice Area: 18) Personal Development

Judgment - The Foundation of Successful Leadership
The means are as important as the ends. The process necessary for sound judgment often runs counter to today’s desire for instant gratification and action based upon “ready, act, justify” vs. “ready, aim, act”. What concepts promote sound judgment and how do we build the discipline required to make the means
matter as much as the ends.

  • Duration: 45-75 minutes
  • ICMA Practice Area: 18) Personal Development

The Power of the Leader - Understanding Power and Authority

It is important for leaders to objectively understand the concept of power, to define the sources of power and to relate power to motivation. The presentation will explore these topics and will define certain power tactics and techniques important to leadership in an environment ripe with ambiguity.

  • Duration: 45-75 minutes
  • ICMA Practice Areas: 6) Initiative, Risk Taking, Vision, Creativity, and Innovation and 18) Personal Development
