Question

Policy for Naming of City Facilities and Sites

The City of Maricopa is in the process of building a number of new facilities – does anyone have an adopted policy outlining the City’s process for naming new facilities, parks, buildings, etc?

We have an adopted Sponsorship Policy that describes the process for a sponsor purchasing naming rights for a facility (requires Council approval of course) but in the need to name a new Multigen Center and regional park, fire stations and city complex buildings, we need to have something to follow.

Hi Danielle -
Here's San Jose's policy; hope it's helpful: http://www.sanjoseca.gov/clerk/cp_manual/CPM_7_5.pdf
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hello Danielle,

I’ve found some resources through the Knowledge Network’s Documents search function that might interest you.

Here are two policies from different cities regarding the naming of public facilities and locations:
http://icma.org/en/icma/knowledge_network/documents/kn/Document/303001/City_FacilitiesProperty_Naming_Policy
http://icma.org/en/icma/knowledge_network/documents/kn/Document/6983/Naming_of_City_Parks_and_Facilities

This is an article examining the politics that can surround the naming of a public location, such as a street. It is more than food for thought; avoiding a political flare-up keeps public attention focused on the most important problems faced by a community:
http://icma.org/en/icma/knowledge_network/documents/kn/Document/3046/Street_Naming_Not_as_Easy_as_You_Might_Think_Two_Case_Studies

I hope you find this information helpful.
