I have a member that is interested in seeing how local governments are using personality assessment tests (Myers Briggs, SDI, and others). in determining work responsibilities, performance appraisals, employee development and promotion analysis. I appreciate any help you can provide.

We've had success using the DiSC instrument in our organization combined with podcasts available at manager-tools.com that go into great detail describing DiSC, what it means and how to use it to improve individual and team performance. We haven't used the tool that extensively to for the purposes that the member is seeking. However, I could see DiSC as being extremely useful in determining work responsibilities and development opportunities. For us, the most significant benefit comes from improved working relationships based on a understanding of the behavioral differences of different tendencies.

Our HR office uses Emergenetics for recruitment and also for employee development. The recruitment tool has us build a personality (extraversion, team orientation, motivators, etc.) and skills (spelling, attention to detail, time management) profile for a given job, then test finalists for fit. It's rigorous for applicants and provides good data. We use it for tricky recruitments range from entry level to lead team. The firm also does personality profiles that can help teams understand each other and fix or prevent management problems. Our employee relations expert runs this training 2-4 times a year as needed. It has been well received.
