Florida Cities - questions about Main Street & Chamber support

Richard Hoon asked

The Director of Development Services for the City of Eustis and myself are seeking information about how other Florida Cities are doing business in regards to the Main Street Program and the Chamber of Commerce. Our City provides support for the Eustis Main Street Program and the Chamber and we are currently evaluating that program. Part of that evaluation involves looking at the structure and support of other programs. Any assistance with the below questions would be appreciated:

  1. Does your City provide monetary support to its Chamber of Commerce? If so:

    a. How much?
    b. Do you have a contract specifying the purpose for these funds?

  2. Does your City provide monetary support to its Main Street Program? If so,

    a. How much?
    b. Do you have a contract specifying the purpose for these funds?
    c. How many years have you provided this support?
    d. Have you decreased / increased the amount of support over time?

Richard,

I haven't seen any information on cities that contribute to the Chamber of Commerce, however, according to their 2010 budget, Kissimee provides about $2100 to their Main Street Program in either city services or fee waivers.

I hope this helps.

I forgot to mention that the Kissimee's contributions have declined over the past few years.

  1. The City of Orlando does not contribute to the Chamber.

  2. Orlando provides funds to Main Street districts via contract.
    a- $215,000 in fiscal year ending 2010.
b- Contracts are general in nature; they do not specify specific expenses.
    c- Since 2007
d- The yearly budgeted amount depends on how many districts are in the program, and how many years they have received funding. It is a sliding scale starting with $50k in year one, and ending with $30k in year five. There are currently five districts with contracts.

Thank you Chase & Mark - these are very helpful. I've managed to get a large amount of information from the City Clerks from around the State and directly. Most support is totally dependent on the budget...but that is what it all boils down to, right?
